TERRITORIAL ARMY

CITY COUNCIL STAFF LEAVE ON PAY URGED "It is our duty to set an example and support these men who sacrifice <i good deal of their time to training for the defence of their country," said Sir George Richardson, urging at last night's meeting of the City Council that it should afford its employees who were in territorial units greater facilities for carrying out their, training. Sir George said City Council employees attending camps had to take that time off their annual leave, and the young men who were giving up such time to be prepared in time of war should not have to sacrifice any holidays. "I feel like taking off my hat to these young fellows," added Sir George, who moved as follows:—"That the necessary leave, with pay, be given to all officers and employees of the City Council who are members of the Territorial Force, to enable them to attend the annual camps of their regiments, such leave not to be deducted from the annual leave; that the necessary leave, without pay, be given to the officers and employees abovementioned, to enable them to attend special courses of instruction which may be held during the year; that the town clerk confer with the Defence Department and the various heads of departments of the council with a view to carrying out the above with a minimum of inconvenience to the council." Mr. L. J. Coakley seconded the motion, but the deputy-mayor, the Hon. B. Martin, M.L.C., moved an amendment that the town clerk be instructed to report on the number of employees affected by the first and second parts of the motion, and that the third section be held over until the report was submitted. The amendment was carried.
