MAYORALTY CAMPAIGN

MOUNT ALBERT CONTEST MR. H. A. ANDERSON'S POLICY The assertion that he stood for the continuance of the present municipal policy in Mount Albert was made by the deputy-mayor, Mr. H. A. Anderson, when opening his campaign for the Mayoralty at King George's Hall, Mount Albert, last night. Mr. Anderson also spoke as a candidate for the Number 2 constituency of the Auckland Transport Board, both vacancies having occurred through the appointment of Jlr. 11. Fernor as a magistrate. Jlr. F. B. Watts presided over a small attendance.

Mr. Anderson said he had beon a member of the Mount Albert Council since September, 1933, and had been doputy-mavor since May of last year. In March, 1934, he had been appointed chairman of the Legal and Finance Committee, since when tho council's finances had been restored to a satisfactory position and the rates hftcl been reduced each year. Ho was opposed to any project that might result in an increase of the rates, Mr. Anderson said. A balanced budget would bo his objective each year, nnd he would fight against the reestablishment of a borough overdraft, an account which had been extinguished recently for the first time in many years.

Capita] works carried out during tho past three years, including tho present year's commitments, were valued at £90,000, while all maintenance work had hoon effected to a satisfactory standard. That was no mean achievement, said Mr. Anderson, when it was considered that no increase in rates was involved. There now were 2(iJ miles of concrete footpaths and 8£ miles of bitumen carriageways in the borough, the major portion having been put down in tho past three years. Mr. Anderson oficred himself as a trained business man for a seat on the Auckland Transport Hoard. Until Mr. Kei'nor had won his seat last year Mount Albert had long been unrepresented on that body, and it was l'or Mount Albert residents to say whether that representation should continue. At the conclusion of his address Mr. Anderson was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
