LARGER AIRPORTS
RUNWAYS A MILE LONG NECESSITY FOR FUTURE Longer runways for tho use of commercial aeroplanes will have to be given increasing attention by the authorities in charge of airports in all countries. Already it is being found that a straight run of 1000 yards, once thought to bo ample for any purpose, is not enough for tho heavily-loaded aeroplanes which commercial companies have to use for tho passengers' comfort and their own profit. When expressing this opinion yesterday, Major A. Murray-Jones, managing-director in Australia for tho do Havilland Aircraft Company, said that runways of a mile in length would have to bo laid down. Major Murray-Jones, who arrived by the Niaagra from Vancouver on his return to Australia from a business visit to the United States and Great Britain, said that in Los Angeles several magnificently appointed aerodromes had been "scrapped" because it had been found that the runways were 110 longer of sufficient length. "It is landing at night and taking off in the day time for which the length of the runways will have to be increased," he said. "New Zealand may not have to think of this to-morrow or this year, but it will sooner or later."
