Carfex is now trained by the Omoto trainer E. Kingan, who was also represented in the race by Metal Bird. The latter was much the better supported and finished third. Carfex registered some very creditable performances
when trained at Hawcra by J. Brown, but he contracted throat trouble and his form fell away considerably. Carfex had not won for nearly two years, his last previous success having been achieved in the Carnarvon Gold Cup at Foxton in September, 1931.
SIRES OF THE SEASON MAORI BOY AT TAKANINI The thoroughbred stallion Maori Boy will be at the service of breeders this season at the moderato fee of five guineas and will be located at Takanini. On the turf Maori Boy was a good performer, winning JCoS-10, and Teddy Boy, the first of his progeny, has shown useful form. Maori Boy is a son of the very successful sire Lucullus. FORM AT RICCARTON REDOLENT VERY PROMISING [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CIIRISTCIIURCII, Friday Shy, the winner of the Duke of Gloucester Cup on Thursday, was bred at Moth von by Mr. S. G. Holmes and, before being purchased by his present owner-trainer, R. W. Lewis, was attached to J. B. Pearson's team at Riccarton. He is not very robust, and on this account his activities have been very much restricted. Shy is by Valkyrian from Stage Fright, by Limond from Tivoli, by Absurd. Mqnipere, who nearly created a great surprise in the Woolston Handicap, won several races 011 the West Coast circuit two years ago, but subsequently lost
1 form, and his effort yesterday was
his best for a long time, lie is a six-year-old gelding; by Arrowsmith from the Paper Money mare Note, who incidentally won the Wools ton Handicap in 1!)27 for Mr. W. Jeffries, of Hoki-
tika, owner of Monipere. The success of Jolly Beggar in the Grand National Hurdles would be very gratifying to his Groymouth owner, Mr. D. H. Roberts, who had the added pleasure of breeding him. Gloneross, clam of .lolly Beggar, was by Glonapp from Med Cross, by Son of a Gun from C'aritas, by Apreniont, and her returns show that she had only two representatives before she died in 10.'52, a filly by Warplano and Jolly Beggar. .Jolly Beggar has not been over-raced and he may be seen in action for somo years yet.
Riecarton stables had only once nrovidod the winners of the two Grand Nationals in tho one year, and that was in li).'].'}, when Thurina and Hounslow wore successful. Redolent recorded his second win for his Dunedin owner, Mrs, M. W. Shiel. when he led the field home in the Sproydon Hurdles yesterday. lie has not been long at hurdling, but taking a lino through his smart work yesterday he has mastered the art and will go on
improving. Redolent is a half-brother to two cood horses, Baldowa and Red Boa.
