Forest Glow, at Wanganui, Trenthnm and Ricearton, was not a shadow of the performer seen in Auckland in the early winter period. His absence from later Jiigrigements was generally expected in the circumstances.

A newcomer to Kllerslio is the three-year-old filly Lady Defoe, by Defoe from Lady Jocelyn, and who is under the charge of A. Morrow. She is a neat filly and although she has been not long in work, gives indications of turning out useful.

Tlio young Duke of Norfolk purchased the French-bred colt Bel Athel just prior to the Derby with the idea of having his colours represented in the race. Although ridden by S. Donoghue, ho was never prominent in the betting and ran an undistinguished race into ninth place. Later the colt was sent to Paris for the Grand Prix, but 011 the eve of the race he got cast in his box and lamed himself.

(In her first appearance for C. C. McCarthy, Owlsgleam ran a good race in the Avonhcad Handicap, at Riccart.oll, and she is expected to improve with a little racing. Now a fivc-vear-old, Owlsgleam began racing at three years, which is an unusual policy for the Chokebore stable, and after winning one race she was sold to a West Coast sportsman. She did not appear at all last season, and the fact that she attracted attention so soon after a long absence is a good augury.

Amateur riders form a largo proportion of tho jockeys iti the Aintrec Grand National, and victory for thorn lias boon quite common, while on one occasion at least all three placed horses wore piloted l iv amateurs. In early times they were seen out occasionally in the C.J.C Grand National Steeples, but the only gentleman rider credited with a win was the laic Mr. F,. H. Martelli, a resident of Tiniaru, who rode Kovaltv to victory in the 1870 race, tho first to be run at Christohureh. jVIr. Martelli had a fatal accident in the hunting field some years later.
