BOOKS FOR BACKBLOCKS , -V Many settlers and their families will benefit this Christmas by the work carried on during the year by the various committees of'tho Victoria League. To view some of this work a large number of members and their friends visited tho league rooms yesterday, when a book afternoon, arranged by tho everready committee and the book committee, was held. Each guest brought with her a book, with the result that two large tables were laden with literature totalling over 600 books and numerous periodicals, which will bo added to the supply already collected and will later be forwarded to the backblocks and schools in time for Christmas. Of special interest was a table laden with beautifully made scrap books, the work of tho girls of the Epsom Grammar School, which will also be distributed to children. The guests were received bv Miss Mowbray, president of the league, Mrs J. B. Macfarlane, chairman of the everready committee, Mrs. L. S. Riekerbv and Dr. do Courcy, representing the book committee in the absence of Miss E. Kenton, the chairman. An enjoyable musical programme was presented and comprised, songs by Miss E. Hutchison, recitations by Miss Marv Cruickshank, Miss 1). Saunders and Miss B. I/)we and pianoforte solos by Miss B. Lowe. Mrs. R. Reed acted as accompanist. In addition, competitions had been arranged by Mrs. A. Green, the winners being Mrs. F. S. Hall and Mrs. Riinciman. The hostesses were:—Mrs. Preston Chambers, Mrs. St. Clair lnglis, Mrs. A. M. Roberton. Mrs. Pearson, Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Clifford, Mrs. Mathias, Mrs. Moir, M iss Mason, Miss E. K eesinj£. Miss Ok win and Miss fj. Thompson
