FROZEN AND CHILLED PRICES AT SMITHFIELD BEEF VALUES LOWER (Received July 120, 5 p.m.) LONDON, July 25 Following arc the latest quotations for frozen and chilled meat, with those of the previous week for comparison:—
The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent tho average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on oiler. LAMB MARKET STEADY BETTER DEMAND FOll EWES The following private cablegrams dealing with the Smithfield meat market have been received: — New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. —Lambs: The market is steady, with a slight improvement in prices of heavyweights, others unchanged. Mutton: For wethers there is a fair demand. Ewes are meeting with better demand, with prices firmer. Beef: The market for frozen beef is slightly easier. Chilled beef is easier this week, owing to heavier supplies. New Zealand porker pigs: Demand is quiet, but prices arc firmer. New Zealand baconers: The market is steady and unchanged. Bank of New Zealand. —Wethers: Demand and prices arc steady. Ewes: There is a better inquiry. Lambs: The market is rather easier. Quotations: — Wethers, light, 4id to old per lb.; heavy, 3;Jd to 4Jd; ewes, 3Jd to 4-id; lambs, twos, 6Jd to 7Jd; eights, 6Jd to 6 : } d; fours, 6id to 6j|d; seconds, to Old.
WOULD WHEAT SHORTAGE PREDICTED (Received July (>.15 p.m.) NEW YOKK, July 25 The Chicago correspondent of tho Now York Times states that according to calculations made by leading grain experts there the world is facing a shortage of wheat. With the leading producing countries suffering sub-nor-mal yields, it is estimated that production will be at least half-a-billiou bushels less than the normal consumption, indicating a complete absorption this year of the world carry-over. The experts' figures show world production at 4639,000,000 bushels, which with 615,000,000 carry-over, will provide available stocks of 52(4,000,000 bushels, compared with last year's consumption of 5289,000,000. According to present crop conditions American production will fall short at least 12,000,000 bushels of normal consumption, indicating that more or less extensivo importations will bo necessary.
