DAVIS CUP COMPETITION STANDARD DISAPPOINTS SOME SURPRISING RESULTS There was little hockey of a high standard seen in the Auckland Association's Davis Cup competition, which was advanced a further round at the Romuera and I'apatoctoe grounds on Saturday afternoon. With the recent heavy rain the fields were heavy and few of.tho sides showed much scientific play. There were several surprising results Mount Eden maintained its recently improved showing and drew with University, 0110 of the strongest teams in the competition. Grammar Old Hoys did well to heat Y.M.C.A. by four goals to nil under the conditions, although the play was never of u sparkling nature. In the principal match at I'apatoctoe St. Luke's was extended to boat Sonierville by live goals to one. i'apatoctoe also suffered a shock at the hands ot Training College and although it finally won by seven gpals to three the score was one-all at half-time. Following were the results of the senior matches: — Grammar Old Hoys, 4; Y.M.C.A., 0. Papatootoo, 7; Training College, if. St. Luke's, 5] Soiucrvillc, 1. Mount Kden, 2; University, 2.
ST. LUKE'S EXTENDED SOMERVILLE'S DISPLAY Somerville, although hoalon by a margin Of four goals, made a good showing against St. Luke's, especially in the first spell. The superior understanding and experience of St. Luke's forwards was the deciding factor and in the latter stages they broke through in series of good movement*. In the early stages .St. Luke's attacked and Delahunty cleared well with powerful kicks. (J race entered the circle, hut his shouting was poor. From a well directed clearing shot by Smith the Somervillo forwards went down the right and the ball swung in for Cochrano to net with a nice shot. Somervilte, 1; SI. Luke's, 0. St. Lukes rallied hard and Corin equalised. A short time later St. Luke's came through in another good movement and Uorin sent in a hard drive, which found the net after Delahunty had attempted to delle-t it. St. Luke's, Somervillo, 1. From a corner Alexander took a shot nnd the halt went straight through to the net. St. Luke's. Somerville, 1. On the resumption Somerville made several dotormined attacks, but the inside forwards were unable to find the goal. St. Luke's pressed and Cat-roll, a second grade player, who was replacing Yipond, sent a fine shot past Delahunty. St. Luke's, -1; Somerville, t. l'lay was even for some time until Carroll scored again shortly before the whistle, making the final score:—St. Luke's, 5; Somerville. 1. Wellbourne was the ,outstanding player on the field. On the left wing be made valiant efforts to lead the Some ville forwards in a series of effective attacks, lie attempted solo efforts and varied the attack, but oil nuch occasion he was unable to secure sufficient support. Draithwaite played well, while Cochrano was fair. Pickup lacks experience and was often out of position. Houghton snowed a good turn of speed. The halves were sound in the first spell, but they tired badly toward the end. Stewart and Smith both did well, while Delahunty made a number of pood saves. ('orin played as well as any of the St. Luke's forwards, although Carroll also did good work. Robertson showed fine form in the halves, and was never found wanting. I'Jark did not. play as well as usual, but King mad* few mistakes. Wat-tain did well ill goal and appears to havo struck his good form of previous years. , Messps. L. Smythcman and F. Craig were umpires.
