£10,000,000 FOR WOOL

LAST SEASON'S CHEQUE

RECORD QUANTITY SOLD

REDUCTION IN CARRY-OVER

New Zealand's wool cheque last season was £10,05.'},297, which is somewhat higher than the preliminary estimate, according to Dalgety anfl Company's annual wool review. This compares with £4,486,479 realised in the previous season. The review states that the outstanding feature of the season was the solid and continued demand for all classes offered and the regularity of prices throughout. There was a marked improvement in prices during 1935-36. For Tine wools the price generally was well above the cost of production and, in many cases, crossbreds sold at a price that left a small margin of profit to the grower. Sales throughout New Zealand were a record for the quantity disposed of,, which included a largo quantity of carried-over wool. Realisations in the past eight seasons compare as follows (thousands of bales and £ omitted):—

The total production of rcool during the 19:55-36 season was 717,232 ba'lert < 620,240 bales greasy and 91,992 bales slipe), against 702,556 bales (613,750 bales greasy and 88,800 bales slipo) in the 1934-35 season. In addition to the amount, 756,833 bales, sold in the Dominion last season, 110.323 bales were shipped for sale overseas. Comparative statistics for the North and South Islands are as follows: —

;c.z. .. 756,533 13 6 5 9.13 351) The destination of wool purchases last season, with figures for the previous season in parentheses, is as follows: United Kingdom, 269,584 (219,949) bales: Japan., China and India, 71,500 (31,845); France, 146,585 (90,915); Germany and Austria, 55,328 (30,831); Belgium and Holland, 42,386 (20,870); U.S.A. and Canada, 62,485 (22,049); Italy and Switzerland, 100 < 10,110); Russia, Norway and Sweden'. 2214; Poland and Czechoslovakia, 14.984; Spain and Denmark, 1176 (previous countries combined, 14,590); local manufacturers, 25',355 (38,638); local seourers, 38.343 ( —); Australia and Tasmania, 26,793 ( —). Owing to the restrictions governing trade with Germany it is not possible to arrive at the correct, figures for Germany and Austria as the customs return for wool exports shows a large quantity as "United Kingdom, optional Continent." Italy's figures are given as 100 bales. The carry-over of wool at the end of last season is estimated at 49.400 bales, against 186.679 bales at the end of the 1934-35 season.
