I)r. F. G. Sopor, who has been appointed professor of chemistry at Otago University, arrived at Wellington from London by the Akaroa on Friday. Dr. Soper was formerly lecturer in charge of physical chemistry at the University College of North Wales, Bangor.

Mr. H. F. O'Leary, K.C., has been nominated by the New Zealand Law Society to appointment to the rules committee which is constituted under the Judicature Act. The society nominates three members, whose nominations must be approved by the Chief Just ice.

Mr. Sydney Francis Hoben arrired from Wellington on Saturday. Mr. Hoben musically directed the initial stage appearance cf Mr. Lawrence Tibbett —in a Shakespeare festival at the Mason Opera House in Los Angeles, the star being Tyrone Power—and in a recent letter to him the baritone mentions that he hopes to come to New Zealand for a concert tour before long.

Mr. D. J. Cummings, commissionet of police, left Auckland by car yester day, after a visit to Rangiahua, the scene of the Nelson murder. He spent Friday there, left for Auckland via Whangarei on Saturday morning, and arrived in the city on Saturday night, when he-attended to a number of matters brought before his notice at the central police station. He was due at AYellington this morning.

Mr. J. Melling, who is travelling overseas prior to taking up his appointment as town clerk of Auckland, i? making an extended tour of Britain, states the London correspondent of the Herald writing on June 27. Fie is accompanied by Mrs. Melling. Cn September 12 they will leave by the liner Orion for Australia and expect to connect with the new intercolonial steamer Awatea, which is due to leave Sydney for Auckland on October 23.

Flying-Officer G. E. Watt, who, it was recently announced, won the Grant Dalton Small Arms Efficiency Cup and the all-round championship at the Royal Air Force rifle meeting at Bisley, is the son of Air. and Mrs. G. Watt, of Matamata. Flying-Officer Watt is 28 years of age, and was a prominent competitor at rifle meetings in the- Dominion. At the Royal Air Force meeting last yeai ho was only one point behind two com petitors who were first with an orjnn* number of points each.
