NAVAL PROMOTIONS
THE HON. E. R. DRUMMOND SIR JOHN KELLY HONOURED British Wireless RUGBY, July 10 In accordance with His Majesty's wishes, Admiral Sir John Kelly, first and principal naval aide-de-camp to the King, has been selected for special promotion to Admiral of the Fleet in recognition of his distinguished services. The promotion will be additional to the authorised numbers. Rear-Admiral Noel Laurence has been promoted Vice-Admiral. The following officers receive promotion to Rear-Admiral and are placed on the retired list: —Captain Harold Franklin, Captain Malcolm Maxwell Scott, Captain Patrick Macnamara, Captain Leonard Potter, Captain John Young, Captain Montague Legge and Captain John Clegg. Captain (Commodore 2nd Class) the Hon. Edmund R. Drummond is also to be promoted Rear-Admiral. He will be borne as supernumerary to the list of flag officers while holding his present appointment under the New Zealand Government. Captain (Commodore 2nd Class) Cyril Sedgwick is promoted Admiral and is placed on the retired list, and in consequence Captain William Whit\}orth is promoted RearAdmiral. Vice-Admiral F. Laurence is reappointed Vice-Admiral of aircraftcarriers on promotion.
Rear-Admiral Drummond was born in 1884 and is the third son of the late Viscount Strathallen. After a period of training on board the Britannia he entered the Navy and was promoted lieutenant in 1906. -During the Great War he served as second in command of the cruiser Caroline from 1914 to 1916 and of the Cardiff until 1919. He was promoted to the rank of commander in 1918 and captain in 1926. In 1930 he was chief-of-stalf to the com-mander-in-chief at Portsmouth, and he was subsequently appointed to the command of the cruiser Delhi. Three years ago Rear-Admiral Drummond was appointed to the command of the Despatch in the Third Cruiser Squadron of the Mediterranean Fleet. In 1922 he was made a Member of the Victorian Order. On April 27 of last year Rear-Admiral Drummond, who had been appointed commodore to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, took over command from Roar-Admiral F. Burgos Watson, whose term of three years on this station had expired. Last month RearAdmiral Drummond stated that his promotion to his present rank was impending.
