TROTTING NOTES

TRAINING AT EPSOM

DERBY CANDIDATES AT WORK MUSKETEER'S SOUND EFFORT

BY ABAYPOS

Although weather conditions were most unfavourable for training at Epsom on Saturday morning, a number of young horses were allotted useful tasks. The cinders and sand tracks wore used, but the footing was not fast. Three aspirants for the next Great Northern Trotting Derby, all representatives of Jewel Pointer, displayed promise, Musketeer, the most seasoned, doing best. Musketeer (P. M. Morrison) went away behind a Torpedo Huon gelding (C. Goodall), and a Truman Direct two-year-old (W. C. Willctts) and just shaded the last-named at the finish in 3.49. The unnamed horses wore together to the mile and a quarter in 3.11, where the Torpedo Huon gelding was eased. Musketeer then ran up to the Truman Direct youngster, who battled on boldly and was headed only near the end. Musketeer ran the last half in 1.14. Ho is a full brother to Great Jewel and shapes well. The Truman Direct colt, who is from a Logan Pointer mare, attracted attention by his sound display. He is stockily built and is a very determined pacer. The Torpodo Huon gelding, whose dam is an unraced maro by Blue Mountain King, shaped well.

Forest Jewel Sprints Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) paced smoothly over a couple of circuits, and when sprinted twice along the back displayed a good turn of speed, registering 37s for separate quarters. Her dam, June Nordiea, by Harold Dillon, was successful when raced by S. M. August, who also won races with her sire, Jewel Pointer. The Jewel Pointer —Ursuline filly (L. McMahon) worked a mile and a-half at a little under a 2.40 rate, without being fully extended. She is growing quickly and has not been hurried. Her dam, who is a daughter of Our Thorpe, was very speedy, but not too reliable at the barrier.

Margaret Bond (L. Cavalier) was allotted strong work on the sand, pacing very freely. She is a robust-looking mare by Worthy Bond—Yenot, hence a full sister to Lilian Bond. Cavalier is also educating a rising two-year-old by Key de Oro from a Gold Bell mare Golden Bramble (C. Goodall), and a Frank Worthy three-year-old (N. L. Craig) were associated in a sound effort over a mile and a-half in 3.47. Golden Bramble began best to lead for a mile, where her companion moved up and they completed tho task together, tho last half-mile in 1.13. Golden Bramble is a four-year-old full sister to Stargum. She has furnished well of late. The Frank Worthy youngster, who is taking a long time to develop, is from the useful mare Typist. Stylish Young Trotter

A Peter Bingen two-year-old (C. G. Lee) gave a fine exhibition of trotting while going a mile and a-half on the sand. She is a stylish young trotter and displays solidness. Her dam, Beta Huon, was a good performer by Petereta —Tod Huon The filly is engaged in next season's Timaru Trotting Stakes. The Nelson Bingen —Queen Pirate gelding (L. J. Mahoney) trotted three circuits without mistake, but did not put much energy into his work. Tho full brother to Nelson Pirate is not lacking in size and when more experienced may show a good deal of improvement.

King's Knight (A. W. Broughton) worked a mile and a-half usefully at a 2.85 rate. King's Knight, who won two races this season, and showed fine stamina in his two-miles success at Manawatu, is by Blue Mountain King —Winestra, who is by the New Zealand Cup winner, Ravenschild. Glen Bingen (P. Morrison) was not set an exacting task while trotting •several laps. The Nelson Bingen—Lenglen gelding is a good typo of young trotter and has benefited from a couple of races in the country. Mill Bells, who has not raced for some considerable time, lias joined Morrison's stablo. C. McMillan is giving Spessiva light exerciso and she looks very bright after a good spell. The three-year-old showed a lot of promise in the spring, but failed to win, and when Lvnworthy was ready to race, Mr. JO. H. Cucksey turned her out. Spessiva is closely related to Red Shadow, her dam Pavlova being from Our Aggie, dam of Red Shadow, who, like Spessiva, is by Travis Axworthy.

Most of tho older horses are at present on tho easy list, but, now that the August programme has been announced, they will soon make their reappearance. Munga Tangi, Lucky Love, Arabond, Manna's Son and Autumn Lou were on tho track jogging on Saturday. Autumn Lou, who went amiss at the Manawatu meeting, lias just boon recommissionod.

TROTTER QUITE SURE COMING TO NEW ZEALAND Miss L. Cuff, of Southland, a prominent trotting breeder and owner of the rising three-year-old Southern Chief, who is a fancied candidate for next season's Derbies, has purchased tho seven-year-old American horse Quite Sure, 2.ljJ, for tho stud. Quite Sure is by the great progenitor Peter Volo, 2.2, who has sired a large number of highclass pacers and trotters, from Ktawah Girl, by Etawah, 2.M. Quito Sure is of the same family as The Harvester, 2.1. Crusader, 2.1,1, Yedus, 2.2}, and High Noon, 2.2;;. As a two-year-old ho recorded 2.9} and was three when he established his 2.1$ record. Nell Volo, who won good handicaps for F. .1. Smith, and Swordsman, who won his first race this season for tho same trainer, are by Peter Volo, and claim relationship to Quite Suro.
