INTRUDER IN SHOP
ATTEMPTED BURGLARY
DISTURBED BY WATCHMAN HAD LOOT READY PACKED Lby telegram—OWN correspondent] HASTINGS. Tuesday An unsuccessful attempt at burglary was made at the premises of H. B. Poppehvell and Company, Limited, men's outfitters, Waipukurau, in the early hours of this morning. The intruder entered by forcing the front door lock between 2.30 and 3 a.m. Ho was disturbed by the nightwatchman, Mr. E. Price, who heard a noiso while passing and found tho door ajar. Tho nightwatchman confronted the intruder, who said he was straightening things up for the morning. Some conversation ensued, during which tho intruder took the nightwatchman unawares and bolted past him and along Takapau Road toward the railway line. Mr. Price gave chose, but the man made good his escape and, it is thought, drove off in a car.
Tho police and tho manager, Mr. McKee, were called and they discovered about £SO worth of clothing packed in boxes near the front entrance. The intruder left behind him his overcoat, a tyro lover and a chisel. He is described as being a man of about 30 to 35 years of age. It was also reported to the police this morning that the padlock had been forced off a petrol pump at a garage and some 12 gallons of petrol had been taken between the hours of midnight and 7 o'clock this morning. Attempts were also made, without success, at forcing tho front entrances of the premises of J. A. Blom, saddler and outfitter, and 11. Blair, tobacconist.
