UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF ESTIMATES AND RATES Contending that the value of the No. 5 unemployment scheme to the board under present conditions did not warrant its retention, and that efficient labour under the now subsidy conditions was much to be preferred, the Mount Roskill Road Board decided last night to notify the Labour Department of its intention to conclude operations under the scheme at the end of the current week until the department approved its proposed works programme. The chairman, Mr. C. M. MeCullough, who moved the adoption of this recommendation from the Works Committee, said the decision was the only one open to the board. The estimates provided for receipts totalling £13,723, and the expenditure of £9883 on district works. The general rate is 4Jd in the pound, which should produce net revenue amounting to £10,060. The clerk, Mr. J. H. Reich, said that in future the board would be required to issue rate demands earlier, so that the penalty date would possibly fall about the end of January. It was decided that the penalty date be sis months from the date of issue of demands. Progress on the Mount Albert-Royal Oak main highway concreting contract was reported to have been satisfactory Since the concreting work was started on May 25, a distance of 26 chains had been completed, at a cost of £1706. Mr. T. Mclndoe was reappointed assessor for the board for three years.
