UNDERGROUND RAILWAY
NEW LINK IN LONDON COSTLY PROJECT COMMENCED [from our own correspondent] By Air Mail LONDON, May 13 Work has just begun on the latest • xtension of tilt? Loudon underground railway system popularly known as the "lube." A link connecting the Metropolitan to the Bakerloo railway is being made, about two and a-half miles, at a cost of from £750,000 to 11,000,000 a mile. TJiero is still a committee in the shadow of Big Ben, whoso duty it is to discuss the Channc-l Tunnel, work on which has been abandoned for more than 25 years. But the project mav still materialise Speeds on the road and in the air are increasing every minute, but below London they move lorward by inches. It is one of the stock jokes that the toads arc always up, but digging that goes "n above ground is nothing compared to that under the surface. There is possibly no other city in the world so under-burrowed as London, which has .even an underground railway several miles in length solely for the transport of mail bags.
