SCOTCH NATION SCHOOLED SMART SPRINTS RECORDED BY ARCHER Conditions were perfect for training opcr-tions at Ellerslie yesterday, when most of tho horses were given their final gallops and schooling before the opening of tho Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting. The jumpers had the use of hurdles on the outside of the course proper and tho steeplechase course and the No. 1 grass was available for galloping. Saltspray (A. McDonald) and Sporting Song (Rohloff) set out to jump four hurdles on the course proper, but unseated their riders at the third fence after jumping the first two very carefully. . Sporting Song was remounted and jumped the remaining i'enco safely. Saltspray afterwards rail six furlongs on the grass in 1.21 1-5. Val Watch (C. Thomson) covered four hurdles on the course proper in 1.20 -1-6, giving a good display. Sho is not engaged to-morrow, but will compete on tho later days of the meeting. llluininagh (Mcßac) pleased better than Kanapa over four hurdles on the course proper in 1.19 4-5. Contact Jumps Well

Contact 'Carroll) was under restraint while going ovt?r four hurdles in 1.23 2-5 and gave a fine display, jumping quickly and cleanly. He afterwards did strong work on the grass. Jolly Beggar (C. Thomson), Scotch Nation (Rennie) and Silk Sox (Rohloff) were in the order named at the end of a schooling bout over four hurdles in 1.13 2-5. it was a good exhibition and Jolly Beggar gained a slight advantage at the third fence and remained in front, to complete his task in very resolute fashion. Scotch Nation was not bustled and jumped well, although ho rapped the last fence. Commencing down the straight, Royal Limond (Ridgway) and' Tangled (C. Thomson) jumped four hurdles on the course proper before continuing up tho hill and down over the steeplechase fences on the flat. Royal Limond displayed. his usual cleverness and Tangled went well for a hunter. ; . Friendly Boy (McLaughlin) led High Quality (Fergus), . Winding Trial (Sharkey) ' and Royal Dispute (L.. Dulieu) over four hurdles in 1.25 2-5. Golclem England (Mcßae) and Dark Princess (Muir) finished ahead of Indiscretion (Webby), with Copey tailed right off, at the end of a round of tho steeplechase fences. Golden England and Dark Princess went well. • , ' Thespis (Burgess) was sent over a round of the steeplechase course, finishing up the straight instead of going over, tha fences on the flat, which he jumped £it tjie commencement. Tho race lie had at To Rapa apparently did him no harm and he appeared sound after working. Thespis was restrained and did not fence a<j well as usual, nearly unseating his rider at the fence near the mile post. Cynical Kid's Effort

Diamond (R. K. Smith) and Electric Flash (Sharkey) set out to jump the steeplechase fences, but the former nearly unseated his jockey at the first fence of the double" and *an off at tho second. Electric Flash on alone, although she did not go over the hill, coming round the hurdles on,.the course propor instead. After having his gear readjusted, Diamond began at the water-jump and went round the steeplechase coursa. Like Thespis, he was under restraint and failed to jump with his customary dash. Rereatu (Gilchrist), after running the first three in 38 2-ss, was going strongly at tbo end of six furlongs in 1.17 : l-5. 6ebrof (Fergus) pleased better than "King Tut (Gough) over five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Sebrof looks ready for a good performance to-morrow; Persian Lady (Cameron) and Solas (R. J. Fearn) ran their first throe furlongs in 40. 2-5s and got to tliß ond of six in 1.17 3-5. Sea Fox (Messervy), who looks bright, completed his work with four furlongs in 51 4-ss. Grateful (Savage) strode over- a round in 2.4 1-5, the last four furlongs in 555. He was not at top at any stage, although he hit out with freedom. Gold Mission and Mustang, ridden by light boys, sprinted four furlongs in 49 4-os, with little between them at the finish. Survoy (Tremain) galloped four furlongs pleasingly in 48 4-sa, a fine effort for a novice. To Hai (Clitford) worked lazily over a round in 2.4 1-5, the last half-mile in 54 l-ss. Ho appears none the worse, for his race at lo Rapa. Clarion Call (Jenkins) was going strongly alongside Forest Glow (C. Thomson) at the conclusion of a round in >2.0 4-5. They rar> the last half-mile in 53 l-5s and went well for jumpers. King Mestor (Goldfinch) worked steadily over a round, running the last seven furlongs in 1.43 4-3. Soloist also did useful work, running homo from the six furlongs in 1.22 3-5* Tooley Streot Beats Pakanui Valspear (Tremain) ran five furlongs in 1.7 3-5, the last half-mile in 51 3-ss. Con Fuoco (H. Gilmer) and Keith Lu (McKenzio) were slightly in advance of Korero (Leach) at the end of a muo in 1.48. , Royal Appellant (Cameron) and Knight of Australia (Wiggins) defeated Weo Pat (Coon) over a mile m 1.45 1-5, the last seven furlongs taking 1.29 4-5. It wag a good gallop, Koyal A pel lan t and Knight of Australia Doth working well, Tooley Street (Hibberd) defeated Pakanui (C. G. Goulsbro) over a lotind in ] 50 2-5, running the last seven furlongs in 1.29 4-5. Tooley Street went well, but Pakanui failed to show ins b6 Mungacre (Tremain) and Solaria (Wiggins) finished together over halt a mile in 50s. Both went in good style. Master Musk defeated United over seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5. One \\ hcstu (Ellis) completed his task with hair a mile in 53 l-ss, striding out boldly. Horowhenua (Kearns) was a shade better than Lagoon (Tremain) over seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5. Lord Val and Johnny Walls sprinted half a mile in 50 l-ss. Dollar Bill (Messervy) covered six furjongs in 1.17 1 -o. Mungatoon (Tremain) ran seven furlongs in 1.33 4-5. The Smuggler, ooking well, worked over a round_ in 22 1-5, the last half-mile in 53 4-3s.
