GREAT NORTHERNS

OPENING TO-MORROW LIKELY hurdles fancies SCOTCH NATION IN DEMAND chances' OF JOLLY BEGGAR Prospects arc very favourable for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Mooting at Ellerslie i;o-morrow, and with a continuation of fine weather , the course should bo faster than for any previous Great Northern carnival. Fine fields are engaged and some excellent racing seems assured. The majority ofthe horses have completed their preparations without mishap, and a feature of the schooling work during tho week las been that there havo been few falls and riders and horses have escaped inj»ry- . Interest ,in the Great Northern Hurdles' and the Cornwall Handicap, the chief events to-morrow, is intense and the fact that both races appear very open should ensure keen speculation. It seems probable that Scotch Ration and Jolly Beggar will dispute favouritism /in the Great Northern Hurdles, and both are entitled to respeeti Scotch Nation has had an excellent preparation and schooled well yesterday without being asked to show his best. Jolly Beggar lias drawn pointed attention to his prospects by his win at Te Rapa last week and his resolute schooling displays in the meantime. Other horses well fancied for the Great Northern Hurdles arc The Smuggler, Clarion Call and Contact. Little has been seen of the Smuggler on the local tracks, but he is in excellent condition after his recent winning exploits .'in ;the South Island. As ho is a good staver and - a reliable jumper, Tho Smuggler should take a lot of beating. Clarion Call was one of the first of the visitors to arrive and has gained many friends by his three good displays of jumping. Contact has also schooled well and it should not be for lack of condition, if he fails to raco prominently. Many horses possess good chances in the Cornwall Handicap, and some who hav<s attracted attention to their chances by -good work are Tooley Strtet, Crooning, Royal Appellant, Knight of Australia, Pakanui, Con Fuoeo and Korero. It is certain that fancies will take a wide range in this race and as has happened in previous years there may be a surprise. Nun Nicer was withdrawn from all engagements at the meeting at 11.10 a.m. yesterday. Nun Nicer's withdrawal" is due to the fact that he de- • Tgloped soreness after his latest gallop, fciid he is to have a spell. Imperial Prince, who is also sore, has been irratched for tho Green Lane Steeplechase. ' ;/
