YOUNG SIRE'S SUCCESS

FIRST PROGENY DO WELL VICTORIES IN CLASSICS Honours among the sires successfully represented in this season's three-year-old classics in New Zealand are divided between Posterity and Iliad. Posterity claimed Entail, winner of the Great Northern Guineas and New Zealand St. Leger, and Heritage, winner of the Avondale Guineas, while Iliad's winning representative was Greek Shepherd, Great Northern Derby and St. Leger. However, when Australian results are thrown in the balance, Iliad emerges with the best record, his representatives there with classic successes being Homer, who dead-heated for first with Alhinga in the A.J.C. Derby, and Yaringa, winner of the Western Australian Derby. Greek Shepherd and Yaringa have also won other good races. Such a result with his first batch of foals is a triumph which no other -ire in recent years in the Dominion has attained. Iliad had the advantage of being thoroughly acclimatised in this country before being asked to take up stud duty, and, as he was mated with several very well-bred mares, he was given the early opportunity for which many colonial-bred horses have waited in vain. Nevertheless, this does not detract from his record, which is likely to gain further distinction in the coming season. Iliad was represented at the yearling sales at Trentham for the first time in 1934 by six colts and seven fillies, but three of the latter were passed at auction, to be sold subsequently. The colts were disposed of as follows: —Homer, Carrickore and Plato, each at 550gns.; Greek Shepherd, 300gns.; Cvllaros, 200gns.; and Newhaven, 175gns. Of the fillies, Yaringa topped the list of Iliad's at 600gns.; Hine Ra, after being passed at 125gns., was secured later by Mr. R. J. Murphy. Dainty Verse, sold to Australia for 3ogns., has been a bargain, and on April 18, at Goodwood, Western Australia. sho won the April Handicap, li miles. Ilias, who cost Mr. W. McA. Duncan lOOgns., has also been a useful performer this season, and La Nijinska, sold to Australia for &sgns., has been the only failure among the fillies on the list. Newhaven, secured by Mr. W. R. Kemball, and Cvllaros, who races in the Dominion in the colours of Mr. H. Dent, have not had a great deal of racing. Cyllaros was in the money as a two-vear-old and again this season. Regarding the first crop as one lot, their aggregate price of approximatelv £3500 has proved a good investment. Last year, the second lot of yearlings was severely culled, only five colts and four fillies being offered by the various breeders, two being passed in at comparatively high prices and one failing to elicit a bid. This year, only one colt and five fillies were offered and sold under the hammer, for a total of 710gns., the colt fetching 300gns.
