DAMAGE TO HIGHWAY

SECTION NEAR MAPIU EFFECT OF HEAVY RAIN [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TE KUITI, Wednesday After heavy rains about 1J miles of reconstruction work on tho Taumarunui road, a portion of the central highway, has become impassablo. The Public Works Department has been reconstructing and realigning the road just north of Mapiu, 25 miles from To Kuiti; and on Sunday tho effect of ivet weather on this section caused tho Automobile Association patrol to erect a "road closed" sign and advise motorists to detour through Piopio, Aria and Mokauiti, an extra J.O miles. Again to-day after heavy rain the road became impassable, and the signs wore re-erected. It appears likely that this section will give troujjjo during tho winter unless metalling is carried out. The rain shows no sign of clearing.
