FARMHOUSE BURNED

LOSS AT FAKURANGA OCCUPANTS ABSENT AT TIME A seven-roomed wooden house on » farm at Pakuranga. occupied by Mr. Ivan St. Romain, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The outbreak was noticed by neighbouring farmers shortly after 8 o'clock, but the rapid spread of the flames, fanned by a strong wind, ■prevented any of the contents being saved. Mr. St. Romain, his wife and a relative, had entered into occupation of the house only a few months ago. They had left home to visit the city shortly after seven o'clock on Saturday evening and were iiot aware of their loss until they returned near midnight. There being no water supply in the district no call was sent to the Mount Wellington brigade, but the superintendent, Mr. R. McCulloch, and Fireman S. McLean voluntarily proceeded to the scene and were instrumental in saving a detached washhouse from destruction. One end was alight, but with the assistance of onlookers they suppressed the flames. The fire attracted a large crowd of spectators, the site being on one of the highest points in the district, and was visible for many miles. The furniture and effects -in the house were insured for £2OO with the National office.
