LAWN TENNIS

HARD COURT TOURNAMENT FINALS IN THIRD SECTION In deplorable weather conditions the remaining events of the Auckland provincial hard eourt championships were decided at the Windmill Road courts on Saturday afternoon. Those comprised all the third section finals except the men's singles, which was won by A. .U. Stubbing last Tuesday. The youthful Mount Eden player Miss B. Sherlock drove too hard and too accurately for her more experienced opponent, Mrs. Johnston, and used her pace and agility to catch Mrs. Johnston out of position. Partnered with her clubmate, Miss P. Mit chell, she also won the ladies' doubles by defeating Misses Roberts and Clayton in two close sets. This match was notable for its long-driving rallies from the gasoline, none of the players making any attempt to seize the net position. For this reason.it was disappointing tennis, as all players showed to advantage at the net on the rare occasions on which they found them 6elves there. The men's doubles event, which was won by Talbot and Haynes, was, by contrast, a very good exhibition. The winners, after a bad start, proved too ''strong for their opponents, chiefly by reason of their superior tactics. In the combined doubles the greater experience of Stone and Miss Roberts told its tale. Detailed results are as follows Ladies' Singles.—Miss B. Sherlock beat Mrs. G. Johnston. l>—3. G—2. Men's Doubles.—R. Talbot and O. Haynes beat G. Stone and C. Luck, I—G, G—2, G—2. Ladies' Doubles.—Misses B. Sherlock and P. Mitchell beat Misses A. Roberts and C. Clayton, G—4, B—6.
