ROAD RACING COMMENCED MANUKAU AMATEUR CLUB The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club opened its 12th road racing season on Saturday at Avondale South. Racing conditions were ideal for the triangular circuit, and the easterly gale was ot immense assistance on the greater portion of the course. The junior five miles attracted a big field of 17 riders, •of whom R. Pye figured on the limit, 3m. with the virtual scratch division, Mynott, Wilson, Chappell and on 30s. A stirring finish resulted in McKay just outsprinting Mynott, with Caldei* a length behind. The placed juniors were:—J. R. McKay (lm 150s), Mm 38s, 1; E. G. Mynott (30s), 13m 335. 2; J. S. Calder (lm 30s), 14m 40s, 3; R. Wilson (30s), 14m 10s, 4. E. G. Mynott, off 30s, was the fastest, in 13m 395. A fine field of 30 riders lined up for the senior event if 15 miles over six laps. The scratch men were J. Brown, D. T. Riddell and L. H. Dwight Dwight, however, was unlucky in breaking his left pedal spindle just as he was about to accelerate from the mark. The breakage caused him to fall heavily and severely Bear his leg on the broken metal. The limit rider, J. Stewart, received 6m 30s start, while among the field were five new riders, the best of whom proved to bo A. W Stonex, who was the first of this section to finish. As anticipated, Cronk won easily. J Brown had a hard sprint with Nicholson, Clark and Morris, the quartet finishing in the named order. The successful seniors were:—C. J. Cronk (5m 15s). 45ra 255, 1; W. W. S. On next Saturday, Anzac Day, no events will be held, but the following Saturday the Auckland Cycling Centre's first big open event over a 25-miles course will be held. LYNNDALE AMATEURS The Lynridale Amateur Cyclists commenced their fourth road racing season at New Lynn on Saturday. The seniors rode over a 131-mile three-lap course, and the juniors a 4i-mileß one-lap. Good fields faced the starter, Mr. F. E. Roberts. 15 seniors and 10 juniors taking part. There was a large number of spectators present. Results : Seniors.—G. Helliwell. 2m 15s, 1: A. Silr.ock, 3m 455,, 2; S. Alderson, lm, 3. Alderson secured fastest time. 41m 17s. EVENTS AT PAPATOETOE The Papatoetoe Cycle Club opened the season on Saturday with senior and junior time trials. The weather conditions prevented fast times. There was a record field for an opening day of 30 riders. Junior Time Trial, over a two-lap course of eight miles.—Fastest times: R. Robinson, 22m 475, 1; R.. Waterman. 23m 21s. 2: C.
