MR. ZANE GREY'S CATCH
RECORD SIZE SHARK TAKEN LARGEST WITH RO'D AND REEL (Received April 10, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 10 The largest shark ever caught in the world with rod and reel was hooked by the fisherman-novelist Mr. Zane Grey, about two miles off the Sydney Heads yesterday evening. It was a tiger shark and was officially weighted at 10361b., only 41b. short of the world's record for a fish of any type caught by rod and reel. This record is also held by Mr. Grey. The record weight for a shark caught in New Zealand waters was 9151b. It was that of a thresher shark caught at Whangaroa in March, 1929, by Mr. Stanley Ellis, of-Hamilton. This was considered a world's record. During the previous year many exceptionally large fish -were caught, including a thresher shark weighing 8321b. taken by a London visitor, Mr. White-Wickham, who also, a month previously, caught a broadbill weighing 6731b. In 1933 Mr. Zane Grey had considerable success in New Zealand, although he caught nothing approaching the Australian monster referred to in the cablegram. His best was a 6221b. thresher shark taken at Whitianga. where he caught several other fish of about the same weight. In March, 1932, Mr. Grey established a swordfish record when at Tahiti he caught a striped marlin swordfish, thought to be the only one ever taken. The fish weighed 10401b., and had it not been mutilated by sharks while being brought in, probably would have exceeded 12001b.
