FIVE INJURED

CAE FALLS IN STBEAM DRIVER'S LONG ORDEAL PINNED BENEATH MOTOR EXTRICATION DIFFICULT [by telegraph—press association] PALMERSTON NORTH. Friday It was by the best of good fortune that a party of five motorists travelling from Wellington on Thursday night missed death when their car crashed into the side of a bridge about a mile north of Otaki and fell into the stream below. All were injured, details being: Alfred Lark, of Willis Street, Wellington, the driver, concussion. Robbie Lark, 5 years, fractured left leg. Miss Kate Mr-Sweeney, severely bruised and cut shoulder. Kenneth Douglas Crooks, injured right shoulder and cuts. Miss Rata Castle, leg and one thigh injured. When the car landed in the bed of the stream the driver was pinned underneath with the side of the car resting on his head. Frantic efforts were made to release him, but it was not until a passing bus arrived on the scene that Mr. Lark could be released after being under the car for about an hour and a-half.

A doctor was summoned from Otaki and the injured were removed to the Wellington Hospital. The car was extensively damaged and the side of the bridge was also damaged. The accident occurred at about midnight.
