LOSS OF RATES

CROWN PROPERTIES Disappointment at the refusal of the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, to make a grant to cover losses through non-payment of rates on Crownmortgaged properties in the district was expressed at a meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board last night. The Minister had replied to tho board's application to the effect that hardship sufficient to warrant a grant had not been established. " The fund set aside for the assistance of local bodies amounts to £8000," stated the chairman of the finance committee, Mr. A. T. O'Donnell, " and of this two bodies have received £4OOO. This board has lost £4OOO during the last five years and the burden of tho loss lias fallen on other ratepayers in the district. There seems to be no definite basis for the distribution of tho fund other than tho whjm of the Minister." It was decided to reply to the Minister, that distribution bo made on a pro rata basis.
