RELIEF AT NORTHCOTE
IMPROVED POSITION Reports made at the monthly meeting of the Northcote Welfare League indicated a slackening in the demand for foodstuffs, due to several former relief workers obtaining employment at better wages. Clothing and household linen were still required, however, in view of the approach of the cooler weather. It was anticipated that with the reduced needs alternate monthly meetings would suffice for the business of the league.
Owing to the depleted state of the funds, the remittance from the Auckland Metropolitan Relief Committee was welcomed.
On behalf of the league the president, Mrs. A. J. Beck, presented a Kaiapoi travelling rug to Mrs. J. G. Lockie, who is leaving Northcote to live at Greymouth, as a token of esteem and in appreciation of her services as secretary. The treasurer, Mr. N. S. Davidson, also referred to the capable manner in which Mrs. Lockie had carried out her duties.
Replying, Mrs. Lockie said it had been a pleasure to work with the committee, and it was a labour of love to promote the welfare of the less fortunate in the community.
Mrs. B. W. Ferner was appointed secretary.
