INCREASE IN BIRTHS
FEWER DEATHS REGISTERED
TREND DURING PRESENT YEAR In contrast to the tendency recently for the rate of natural increase of the population to show a decline in New Zealand, there was an increase in the number of births and a decrease in the deaths registered at Auckland last month, as compared with February, 1935. The same position occurred in January. A total of 227 births was registered in Auckland last month, compared with 203 in the corresponding month last year, making the total for the first two months of 1936, 464, compared with 431. Deaths registered numbqred 183, compared with 136 in February, 1935. For the year the total is now 255, compared with 282. There was a substantial increase last month in marriages, which totalled 213, against 176 in the same month last year. The total for the months is 397, compared with 344. There were 47 marriages by the registrar last month, an increase of 19 over the previous February, making the total for the year 89, as against 58 during the first two months of 1935.
