SHOPLIFTER CAUGHT
CHARGES AGAINST MAORI THREE MONTHS IN GAOL [by TKLEGRAI'H —own correspondent] PALMERSTOX NORTH, Tuesday Stated to have been caught redhanded in the act of shoplifting, a youthful Maori, Simon Knox, aged 24, faced three charges of theft from city stores in the Palmerston North Magistrate's Court. Senior-Sergeant Moriarty told the magistrate that accused had been held until the arrival of the police, and 011 the way to the watch-house had endeavoured to escape. He was chased by a constable and caught again in the vicinity of the post office. When searched goods were found on him from three stores, which pointed to systematic shoplifting. Accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
