MASS EDUCATION

DANGER TO COMBAT DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURE " In this age, one of the dangers w© have to combat is that of mass education," said Mr. C. M. Littlejohn, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, in addressing a fair attendance of old boys at a luncheon in his honour at Milne and Choyce's Reception Hall yesterday. A great deal was heard about mass production in the present age of materialism, he said, and there was the danger of it invading the educational world to the detriment of the individual. " Mass education to the neglect of the cultural and spiritual is hopelessly lopsided and will not produce equal results," Mr. Littlejohn said. " Our aim. is a full development of the academic, cultural and spiritual, remembering that while life is the gift of nature, the gift of wisdom is beautiful living." An effort was being made to develop the cultural side of education as well as the examination aspect, he added. The ' school library was very popular, and ; its use tended to develop the habit of i reading which would stand the boys in ■ good stead in their future life.
