BRASS BANDS' CONTEST
DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENING IN NEW PLYMOUTH [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday A memorable scene was presented at the official opening of the New Zealand brass bands' contest in the floodlighted natural amphitheatre of Pukekura Park to-night. Ominous low clouds, with flashes of lightning in the distance and a few heavy drops of rain, threatened to spoil the opening ceremony, but rain did not materialise, although oppressive heat remained. The attendance of the public was about 3000. , , A civic welcome to the visiting bands was extended by the Mayor, Mr. E. 11. C. Gilmour. Other speakers were Mr. E. Palliser, president of the Nejv Zealand Brass Bands' Association, and Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. Twelve bands of both grades competed on an even footing to-night in the hymn test. The adjudicator was Mr. A. Baile, and tho playing of the bands was very uniform and of a high standard. Tho result of the hymn test was as follows: —Woolston Brass Band, 96 points, 1 ; Greymouth Municipal Band, 93, 2; Port Nicholson Silver Band and Timaru Band, equal, 92, 3; Cairns (Queensland) Band, 91, 5. Results of solo competitions were:— E Flat Soprano Cornet. —G. Unwin (St. Kilda), 96 points, 1; N. Henstridgo (Cairns), J. Foster (Wellington Tramways) and E. Robinson (Nelson), equal, 95, 2; R. Trounson (Wellington West Coast) and F. Greig (Greymouth), equal, 94, 5. B. Flat or BB Flat Bass.—E. Hatton (Greymouth), 94 points, 1; C. Hanson (Woolston), 93, 2; H. C. Unwin (Hastings), 92, 3. Baritone Solo. —L. G. Hickman (Wanganui Garrison), 76 points, 1; J. Jackson (Greymouth), 75, 2; A. Winslade (St. Kilda) and R. Fcnton (Port Nicholson), equal, 74, 3.
