FEWER SAFETY ZONES CHANGES IN QUEEN STREET TRANSPORT BOARD'S DECISION A decision to reduce tho number of safety zones in Queen Street was made a£ a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board yesterday. A safety zone is to bo erected between Shortland Street and Vulcau Lane, opposite tho present zone on tho inward tramlines near Swanson Street. The zone between I ort and Shortland Streets, that between Vulcan Lane and Durham Street, and also one on the inward side near Wyndham Street are to be removed. In a. report to the board, tlio manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, stated that tho alteration would be an advantage to tho traffic flow in Queen Street, and tho zones to be removed could bo regarded as unnecessary. The new arrangement would equalise the spacing between the zones, and would facilitate traffic in and out of Fort Street and Vulcan Lane. There would be an adequate number of loading points to meet tho convenience of tram passengers, while it was estimated that the alteration in zones would save 23(2 stops a day. The report stated that, with regard to tho inward side of- Queen Street, consideration had been given to the removal of the zone near Wyndham Street. If this was removed, tho distance between the Swanson Street and Victoria Street zones would be 833 yds., which would mean that tram passengers would have to walk a maximum distance of 167 yds. to the nearest loading point. It was recommended that the removal of this zone be considered at a later date, but that the alteration to the zones on the outward trip should be carried out. After a lengthy discussion, the report was adopted, and it was decided to carry into effect tho suggestions outlined in the report, excepting the suggestion concerning the zone near Wyndham Street, which it was decided to remove when the alteration of the other zones took place.
