MIGRATION SURVEY

AUSTRALIAN PLAN FINDING POPULATION LIMIT REMOVAL OF MISCONCEPTIONS By Telegraph—Press Association-'Copyright (Received Februnry 24. 7.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Feb. 24 The Sun's Canberra correspondent says that to remove misconceptions abroad, particularly in Britain, concerning the possibilities of closer settlement in Australia, the Government is considering an investigation into the migration absorption capacity of the Commonwealth. The result of such a survey, it is hoped, will be to obtain nn accurate estimate of tho economic population limit, not only of Australia as a whole, but of the various portions of the country, in tho light of present conditions. BRITISH YOUTHS WAITING "BIG BROTHER" MOVEMENT ORGANISATION READY LONDON, Feb. 13 i Sir Henry Galway, chairman of the "Big Brother" committee, says that his organisation is ready and anxious to resume the scheme in Australia. Information disclosed that vacancies on sheep stations and dairy farms could not be filled locally, he said, because Australian parents in towns were reluctant to send boys on the land. However, British youths of good physique and education, could be found to fill vacancies, although Australian indecision at present was an obstacle. The "Big Brother" movement would resume activities immediately migration recommenced. He would like to see the "Big Brother" plan become Empire-wide. The Premier of Queensland, Mr. Forgan Smith, who is in London, discussing the reported Whitehall disappointment at his immigration views, says that there is nothing in them inconsistent with his Queensland statements. Britain, he states, cannot expect Queensland to absorb more immigrants unless a British market for their produce is assured. Australia must consider her own unemployed, and not risk merely transferring unemployment. "It was complained," he added, "that some immigrants to Victoria were misled. I am not going to mislead the British people."
