NOTES ON THE RACING

CAPPY WINS DECISIVELY GOOD EFFORT BY SOLOIST KILBERIS AGAIN SUCCESSFUL BY ARCHER The win favourite Cappy scored a decisivo victory in tho Ohinowai Handicap. Le Chasseur, Stormy Weather and Cappy were smartest to begin, Cappy leading across tho top from Solas, Because, Stormy Weather and Lo Chasseur. Entering the straight Cappy, Solas and Because were racing abreast in tho lead ahead of Stormy Weather, Le Chasseur, King Thoo and Full of Scotch. With a furlong to go Cappy held a slight advantage, and ho went on to win by a length from King Theo, who finished fairly well on tho outside. Full of Scotch again ran on for third, and Stormy Weather was fourth. Next to finish were Solas, Le Chasseur, Hesskotoon and Lilbert, who were in close order. Tho winner is a solid-looking gelding with a nice turn of speed, and he is in tho same stable as King Roy. King Theo displayed im- . proved form and Full of Scotch ran another solid race. Top-weight Successful The top-weight Soloist justified his favouritism for the Raglan Hurdles by winning nicely. Modern Maid and Silver Wattle were the leaders over the first fence, and then Golden England assumod the lead to mako play past the stands from Silver Wattle, Irish Comet, Modern Maid, Mossvale and Soloist. Modern Maid nearly fell at the first fence along tho back and at the top Golden England was tho leader from Mossvale, Irish Comet, Soloist and Modern Maid. These positions were maintained until they reached tho straight, where Soloist soon took the measure of the leaders to win by two lengths from Golden England. Mossvale was three-parts of a length away third and Irish Comet was almost in line fourth, with No Fooling, Modern Maid and Folly's Choice next. Soloist registered a fine performance and proved a class above the others. The each-way favourite Clessamor attempted to win all tho way in the To Rore Hack Handicap, but he was decisively beaten at the end by the fast-finishing Gay Defence. Clessamor was quickly prominent from Calshot, Trouvaille and Triune, who lost his position in the middle stages. Entering the straight Clessamor was just ahead of Calshot. with Diacquedoon, Trouvaille, Mangukaha and Gay Defence following. Below the distance Calshot challenged, and a little further on Gay Defence came on the outside. Gay Defence maintained his run in fine style to score by half a length from Clessamor, who defeated Calshot by two lengths. Trouvaille was fourth, followed by Diacquedoon, Mangukaha and Winlona. Gay Defence was a fair way back the turn and finished well. Merial Scores Again The moderately-fancied Lagoon was responsible for a mild surprise in winning the Vercoe Handicap, paying double figures on the straight-out machine. Royal Secret and Namakia were smartest to begin, and they were the leaders along the back from Scotland, Prince Acre, Adalene, Velocipede and Prince Colossus, with Lagoon in the rear. The positions were much the same at tho half-mile, and Namakia led into the straight from Royal Secret, Scotland, Prince Acre, Velocipede and Adalene, with Prince Colossus and Lagoon moving up. Near the distance Lagoon flashed up on tho outside and she went on in good style to score by a length from Royal Secret, who beat Prince Colossus by a neck. Adalene was fourth, followed by Velocipede, Prince Acre, Namakia and Scotland. Lagoon's finishing effort was good. Royal Secr«?t showed that she is returning to form and Prince Colossus ran another good race. Form worked out well in the Eureka Handicap when the favourites Merial and Ned Cuttle, who finished first and second in the Juvenile Handicap, again filled the same positions. Merial jumped out smartly from No. 1, but soon gave way to Philemup, with Ned Cuttle handy and Gay Chief dropping back after beginning well. Rounding the turn Philemup was in command from Ned Cuttle and Merial, with Rulette, Surella and Surview showing up on the outside. Near the distance Ned Cuttle headed Philemup and momentarily looked like winning. Merial then challenged and she finished too well for Ned Cuttle to beat him cleverly by a neck. Gay Chief came home strongly to finish third threeparts of a length away and Philemup was fourth. Next to finish were Rulette,, Gay Streak and Surella. Merial and Ned Cuttle ran true to form and the former again showed superiority. An Overdue Win The four-year-old Sirona scored a long oyerdue win in the Puketaha HighWeight Handicap, her first since she accounted for the Calliope Handicap at the Takapuna Jockey Club's summer meeting in January, 1934. Whakapara and Sirona soon ran to the front and when the field had settled down they were together in the lead from Solomon. Entering the straight Sirona led from Solomon, Whakapara and Tahurangi, who was roming fast on tho outside, with Scotch Nation also making a forward move. Onco in line for the post Tahurangi challenged Sirona and Solomon, hut Sirona drew away to win by two lengths from Scotch Nation, who came fast on the outside. Tahurangi was a length away third and Solomon was fourth ahead of L'AUegro, Whakapara and King Musk. Nocks separated the placed horses in a fine finish in the Flying Handicap, the light-weight Whirling staying on well to win at a good price. Princess Star, Whirling and Prince Ven were smartest to begin, but Whirling soon ran to tho lead from Wahine Reihi, Princess Star, Princo Ven and Puss Moth, who was on tho outside. Entering the straight Whirling and Wahine Reihi were tho leaders, with Princo Ven and Puss Moth moving up on the outside and Princess Star just in behind. Near the distance Princess Star made a dash on tho rails, hut Whirling fought on well to gain tho honours. Coronis finished on to get third and Prince Ven was fourth ahead of Puss Moth and Wahine Reihi. Whirling was responsible for a solid performance and ran on courageously at the end. - Saturday's Form Repeated Running true to tho form they revealed in the Beerescourt Hack Handicap on the first day, Kilberis and Con Fuoco again finished first and second in the Huntly Hack Handicap, although on this occasion Kilberis won a little more decisively. The field went away to a good start and along the back Kilberis was in command from Racemosus, Queen Nona, Orefield and Gay Defence. Crossing tho top Con Fuoco moved up and at the homo turn ho was in front with Kilberis, the pair being closely followed by Gay Defence, Racemosus and Domboy, wiio was wido out. Near the distance Gay Defence challenged strongly on tho rails, but Kilberis went on well to win by a length from Con Fuoco, who defeated Gay Defence by a neck. Orefield was fourth succeeded by Queen Nona and Racemosus. It was the best performance Kilberis has registered and he has made a good deal of improvement. Con Fuoco ran another good /ace and his turn may come soon. Gay Defence, who carried a 71b. rehandicap, had every chance, but the other pair were superior on tho day.
