HORTICULTURE INSTITUTE
REMITS FOR CONFERENCE GATHERING ON MARCH 4 Arrangements have been completed for the annual conference of the NewZealand Institute of Horticulture, .which will be held at the Auckland .University College on March 4. The business will include the consideration of 24 remits, which have been received from the executive and from the Auckland and Canterbury societies. They include a request that the Government should be urged to proyide increased facilities for the training of the youth of the Dominion in the practice of agriculture, and, secondly, that the Government, the Education Department and the Senate of the University of New Zealand should be urged to provide for the teaching of botany and general experimental science in all post-primary schools on the same or on a preferential footing to chemistry and physics, and to enable the change to be mads. It is also suggested that the Government should be asked to provide native trees for public ceremonies on Arbor Day; that the Government be urged to deal with the problems of ragwort and other noxious weeds as a national effort; that the Government be urged to recognise the work done by the citrus committee of the institute by making adequate provision for the continuance of the investigations; and that the Government be requested to protect the trees of the Dominion from the onslaughts of electric-power boards and other authorities. Another recommendation is that the Government should include at the major tourist resorts, such as Queenstown, Hanmer, Waitomo, Rotorua, Te Aroha and Tongariro. a well-constructed garden, suited to the cultivation of a representative collection of the indigenous flora of the district. Other remits suggest that the Government should be urged to set aside the Waipoua kauri forest as a sanctuary for all time; that its attention should be drawn to the urgent necessity for the preservation of all native forests on hill country; and that it should be urged again to consider the establishment of a national botanic garden. A lecture, "A Brief History of thp Eoyal Horticultural Society," will be given by Mr T. Waugh, of Wellington, in the University College Hall, on Wednesday night, March 4.
