GREY LYNN SCHOOL

CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMME FOR WEEK-END Arrangements are well in hand for the celebration of the silver jubilee of the Grey Lynn School in the weekend. Although the school was actually opened 25 years ago to-day, it was felt by the committee that has organised the celebrations than many more past pupils would be able to participate in a week-end function than in one held during the week. The school Was opened in 1911. For about 18 months prior to the opening, classes had been held in a hall in the district, the small school being classed as a branch of the Newton West School. However, the rapidly growing population in the Surrey Hills, as Grey Lynn was then called, necessitated the erection of a separate school. The opening ceremony and the laying of the foundation stone wero performed by the late Sir _ (then the Hon.) George Fowlds, Minister of Education in the Ward Ministry, and member for the district. The present headmaster, Mr. T. Turbott, recalled yesterday _ that throughout tho remainder of his life Sir George took an intensely keen interest in tho welfare and progress of the school. With his death, those connected with the school considered that they had lost ono of their best friends. Tho first headmaster at Groy Lynn was tho late Mr. J. Campbell. He was succeeded by Mr. N. Law and Mr. W. Boden, both now inspectors, Mr. W. H. Newton, present chairman of the school committee, Mr. J. Warn, and Mr. Turbott, who came to tho school in 1932. Tho jubilee celebrations will commence with a two hours' entertainment for old pupils in the school grounds at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Displays of drill and games will be given by tho present pupils and a decorated vehicles competition will bo held for tho younger children. This will bo followed by aiternoon tea at 4 o'clock and a grand reunion ball at tho Manchester Unity Hall in the evening. On Sunday, there will be an assembly of past and present pupilß in the grounds at 2 p.m., the old pupils being grouped in decades. Accompanied by two bands and a party of returned soldiers, all will march to tho Western Springs Stadium, where an interdenominational devotional service will be held in tho open air. A largo attendance is anticipated and arrangements have been made for tho amplification of the addresses through loudspeakers. Although this servico will conclude tho actual jubilee celebrations, it is likely that the children at the school will be granted a day's holiday on Monday in honour of the event.
