BIRKENHEAD DRAINAGE
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S SCHEME LOAN POLL TO BE HELD TO-DAY A poll of Birkenhead ratepayers is to bo held to-day on the proposal of the Birkenhead Borough Council to borrow £28,000 for a sewerage scheme for the more thickly populated portion of the borough. The voto will bo taken between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., polling booths being provided at the Borough Chambers at Birkenhead and at Phoenix Chambers, in Lower Queen Street, Auckland. The scheme, which excludes the area comprising the watershed and refinery of the Colonial Sugar ConVpany, and also the Birkdale district, is estimated by the consulting engineer, Mr. R. P. Worley, to cost £35,000, and the balance of £7OOO will be provided by the Unemployment Board as subsidy on wages expended in the installation. A special rate of 2.8 d in the pound on the unimproved value of £144,464 of the properties in the drainage area is to be struck to provide interest and sinking fund on the loan if the proposal is carried.
