SHEETS STOLEN
OFFENCE BY TRAVELLER REFORMATIVE DETENTION The theft of 12 pairs of sheets, valued at £7 16s, from a warehouse in Auckland, on February 13, was admitted by Vivian Henry George Wirk, a traveller, who appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Senior-Detective Hall said that accused was seen leaving the warehouse with two packages under his arm. The circumstances were suspicious and members of the staff followed him. Wirk was accosted when he was about to put the packages into a waiting taxi. There were two packages already in the taxi. Joseph Meltzer. a licensed dealer, said that he had bought four packages of sheets from accused for £2 2s. He knew Wirk was a salesman and had done business with him in the past. Mr. Noble, who appeared for Wirk, said that although accused had a fairly formidable list of previous convictions an analysis would show that theft did not predominate. Drink was largely his trouble. Accused was a good salesman. " Short terms of imprisonment do not seem to have done you any good in the past," said Mr. Wilson in sentencing Wirk to 12 months' reformative detention.
