ST. HELIERS BUSES
RENEWAL OF LICENCE AN APPLICATION DEFERRED AUTHORITY SEEKS DETAILS An application for the renewal of a licence for bus services between St. Heliers find Auckland, and for permission to take up and set down passengers at t!he Parnell baths, made by L. J. Keys, Limited, was deferred for a month at a meeting of the Auckland | Transport Board, sitting as the Metroi politan Licensing Authority, yesterday, i When asked by the chairman, the I Hon. H. G. R. Mason, if the company I could supply details of its finances to 1 ascertain if the services were remunera- ! tive, Mr. Keys said the fares had been reduced at various times. If the comi pany reached a certain profit one year, the fares were reduced the following ! year. The Chairman: But the authority requires details on this matter. It is a j long time since the licence was considered as far as fares are concerned, j Mr. Keys: I will refer it to my solii citor. In reply to Mr. Keys, who asked why I his service should be sorted out when other renewals of licences were granted readily, the chairman said the company was running a service which had become stabilised. It was a substantial service which had been running for five years. v Mr. Keys: Twenty years. Mr. J. A. C. Allum held that the application should be deferred. It had to be taken into account what a service was earning and it would be awkward if fares were fixed that were not remunerative. The procedure was laid down by the Act and the finances of the operator of a service had to be made available to the authority. Mr. Keys said he was agreeable to furnish the necessary particulars regarding his company's finances, but in the meantime, for the convenience of the public, he would like a ruling in regard to the stop at Parnell baths. Mr. A. E. Ford, in raising an objection to the stop being made at Parnell baths, said if it was conceded it would interfere with the board's service running to Point Resolution, which was just paying. Under the present licence the company's buses were not permitted to stop within 15 chains of the baths. The chairman said that, in view of the deferring of the application, the matter could not be considered at that stage.
