Mr. W. H. Gummer left last evening for Wellington. Mr. A. K. North returned from Wellington yesterday. Dr. M. H. Watt, Director-General of Health, is at the Hotel Cargen. Mr. A. G. Hultquist, M.P. for Bay of Plenty, left Auckland for Whakatane yesterday. Mr. J. A. Lee, Parliamentary UnderSecretary to the Prime Minister, leffc for Wellington last evening. Sir Henry Scott, of Suva, returned to Auckland yesterday after a successful fishing trip to the Bay of Islands. He is at the Grand Hotel. Mr. T. N. Smallwood, joint managing director of the Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand, was a passenger by the limited express last evening for Wellington. Mr. E. A. Sargent, of Wellington, has been re-elected president of the New Zealand Institute of Opticians at the annual conference of the institute at Christchurch. Mr. A. J. Stratford, registrar of the New Zealand Federation of Justices, who recently underwent an operation, is reported to be making good progress toward recovery. Mr. T. D. Lennie, of Christchurch, ■has been appointed judge of trade digplays, district bays, special stands and pot plants at the forthcoming National Horticultural Show in Auckland. The Rev. G. Jackson, minister of the Green Lane Congregational Church, left for Dunedin yesterday to attend the annual Assembly of the Congregational Union of New Zealand. Mr. N. R. Mclsaac, chief postmaster at Invercargill, has been appointed chief postmaster at Dunedin in succession to Mr. J. Madden, who was recently appointed chief postmaster in Wellington. "Mr. C. J. McKenzie, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Depart-, ment, who has been seriously ill in the* Grevmouth Public Hospital, is reported to be showing a definite improvement. Mr. H. M. Caselberg, manager of the Hawera branch of the Taranaki Farmers' Co-operative Association, has been appointed chief valuer for the North Island for the Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand. Dr. P. Stanley Foster, ..district governor of Rotary for New Zealand, arrived in Auckland yesterday with Mrs. Foster to take part in the Rotary Conference, which opens to-day. They are at the Hotel Cargen. "' Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, of Wellington, managing director of Dominion Motors, Limited, who arrived in Auckland at the week-end. intends tp remain here until the arrival of Lord Nuffield, who is expected to reach New Zealand early in March. • Mr. C. H. T. Palmer, president of the Auckland branch of ,the| Navy League, and Mr. W. J. man of the executive, will ' represent the branch at the annual conference of New Zealand branches, which opens at Wellington to-morrow. Mr. G. T. Thurston, secretary of the Amalgamated Engineers' Union, Christchurch, has been recommended to the Government by the Alliance of Labour as the Labour representative for New Zealand to the International Labour Conference at Geneva in June. Mr. L. T. Whelan has left Wanganui for Dunedin to take up his duties a* manager of the Dunedin branch of the Standard Insurance Company, Limited. Mr. E. B. Haywood has been appointed manager of the Wanganui branch. Professor G. E. Thompson, of Otago University, who has been chairman of the Otago High Schools' Board for the past 15 years, has retired. Another old member of the board, Mr. W. R. Brugh, has been appointed to succeed him.
