IJPPEK WAIROA EVENTS HORSE CLASSES AND RIDERS FLOOD HARDSHIPS OVERCOME [from our own connks pondent] DARG AVILLE, Saturday The Upper Wairoa loth annual agricultural and pastoral show was held at the showgrounds at Tangiteroria today under fine but overcast conditions. Heavy showers fell late in the afternoon. The attendance was Originally the show was scheduled for February 1 and indoor exhibits had been judged the previous day, but the heavy rains which caused the recent Hood's in the North forced a postponement until to-day. Considerable damage caused by Hood waters to the stock pens, made it necessary to cancel the stock, sheep and pig competitions, and the events decided to-day were confined to horse events and Highland dancing. "In spite of the difficulties which have confronted us, the show is as much a success as we expected," commented the president, Mr. 13. Coleman. All the events had produced splendid competition, he said, particulaily the juvenile, while the dancing had been a feature of the day's entertainment. Commenting on the horse section, the judge, Mr, E. K. Plaisted, of Wlmngtirei, said ho had had the pleasure of judging a line class ol hacks and riders who were a credit to the district. The children would compete with success in any show in the Dominion and he had experienced great difficulty in separating them. Since he had last officiated ■at the Upper Wairoa show the horses had improved in class anil numbers and the district could congratulate Itself on its progress. The gate receipts amounted to £25 and it is expected that this amount will be nearly sufficient to cover the expenses. Results: HORSE SECTION Medium Draughts.
