ROTORUA TOURNEY

PAIES FINAL DECIDED WIN FOR AUCKLAND TEAM KEYS AND SMITH SUCCESSFUL [from our own correspondent] ROTORUA, Sunday In a game lacking anything of outstanding merit Keys and Smith, of the Auckland Club, won the final of the Kotorua Bowling Club's annual pairs tournament yesterday, by defeating Graham and Hunt, of Ponsonby, 22—11, on the 20th head. The match was played in line, sunny weather, but the green was heavy, which probably largely accounted for the somewhat erratic bowls played by both teams throughout. The Auckland team, however, was definitely superior and at no stage did it look like losing the decision. Keys placed his three bowls within inches of the jack on the first head. With his first Hunt saved two and left himself the shot. Following a good drive, good drawine by Keys gave Smith three early on the second and Hunt could not alter the position, making the score:—Auckland, !i; Ponsonby, 1. Neither lca-d could reach n long head in the third, Keys, however, holding tiie shot. Hunt was thill with his first and Smith placed a second, Auckland Bcoring two. Both Keys and Graham scored touchers with their seconds on the fourth, the bowls rcstinjf on opposite sides of the jack. Smith unluckily took out hie partner's bowl and, with a drive, Hunt gave the shot away and left Auckland lying two. Ponsonby was again unlucky when Graham trailed kitty to his opponent's bowl, Smith placing a second with a good draw with his last. Hunt made a great effort to draw the shot, missing only by inches. Auckland, 9; Ponsonby, 1. Smith was the more accurate of the leads and drew two counters within a foot of the jack on the sixth head after being short with his first bowl. Smith left Auckland with three, but with his next rested one of Hunt's bowls to give away one. Hunt again failed in a good effort to draw shot. The seventh head was burned by Hunt when Auckland was lying one and with his first Graham scored a toucher, which trailed the jack to Key's bowl. Hunt was mont erratic and could not become accustomed to the heavy green. Again the luck was against him when with a fast shot ho gave Auckland two. Keys was playing a great game as lead and on the eighth he had two counters. Hunt then gained well-deserved applause by twice drawing through the gap to give Ponsonby its first points since the opening head. Auckland, 12; Ponsonby, 3. To a shorter head Graham improved and gained the shot, Smith trailing for a possible three. A good draw by Hunt gave the advantage to Ponsonby, and lie was unlucky not to place a second with his last. Both the leads' bowls were close in to the jack on the tenth, Keys having the shot bowl. The position was unaltered at the close of the head. The 11th head was disappointing, none of the players being able to gauge the distance to the jack with any degree of accuracy. Both skips, however, were nearer the jack with their seconds, the head giving one to Ponsonby. Ponsonby had the better of the 12th head in the early stages when its team had four bowls within inches of the jack. However, with a tunning shot Smith displaced Ponsonby's bowls to score one. Auckland, 14; Ponsonby, 5. The leads were now judging the green more accurately, Auckland lying one on the head until Hunt rested one of his partner's bowls to reverse the position, making the score: —Auckland, 14; Ponsonby, 6. The shot bowl was alternatively held by both teams early on the, lltli, Hunt failing to kill the head with his last. Smith drew a Becond, plncing Auckland ten points in the lead. Lying two down on the 15th head Hunt, with a well-judged drive, took both counters out, leaving Ponsonby with two. The next h"ad was open, Ponsonby holding the shot after the play of the leada. Smith went close to taking the shot, but Ponsonby clung to its advantage of One, with a measure for seconds. Auckland, 16; Ponsonby, 9. The 16th head was short.» Keys gaining first shot. Smith displaced Ponsonby's second, giving Auckland three on the head, which was left unchanged after a drive by Hunt. Auckland, 19; Ponsonby, 0. Ponsonby had the shot bowl on the 18th. with Auckland lying second when Hunt drove, taking out hiß own bowl and leaving Auckland two and increasing its lead to 12. With three heads to play Graham placed three shots on the next, but a dead draw to the jack gave the advantage to Auckland. The head was burned by Hunt. On the replay Graham placed two, the Auckland skip saving one with a good draw. By trailing kitty into the ditch Hunt gave Ponsonby three, one being saved by Smith. Hunt was showing accuracy in driving and. after taking shot away from Auckland, he burned the head when Smith again gained the shot. Ponsonby was lying two on the 20th head. Hunt missing a chance of scoring five from a running shot with his last bowl. Smith settled the issue by gaining shot, the result being:—Auckland. 22: Ponsonby, 11.
