CONTESTS ON SATURDAY DECISION OF CLUB TRIALS CREWS MEET WITH MISHAPS Rowing contests on the Waitemata Harbour on Saturday afternoon were remarkable for the number of mishaps and misfortunes that befel the competing oarsmen. Firstly, a north-east-erly breeze made rowing on the usual waterfront road course impracticable, and the eastern waterfront clubs transferred operations to Hobson Bay, a course under the lee of the railway embankment being followed. Mishaps to craft nnd gear were frequent, causing in one instance the postponement of trials until Inter in the week-end. One of the Wnitemata crews, rowing to Hobson Bay, swamped, the oarsmen having a long swim, but being ultimately picked up by a couple of yachts. Broken riggers and oars also served to delay the rucing of other clubs. „ L WEST END CLUB BELLAMY'S CREW SUCCESSFUL Racing at the West End Club was fox trophies presented by a life-member, Mr. N. Cossey, and six crews participated. Throe heats, a semi-final and a final were rowed, a novel innovation being the placing of younger members of the club in the stroke seats, this inciting more thnn usual interest in the racing. The scheme proved satisfactory. The contests, however, were disappointing, the Bemi-finnl in particular being robbed of interest through Raper's crew hnving trouble with its craft after half the distnnce hnd been covered. Lawson nnd Rnper contested the Bemifinnl, which in the early stages promised to be a lively contesf. Rnper, however, experienced trouble with his crnft, nnd retired.
