PACIFIC SHIPPING
FOREIGN COMPETITION CONFERENCE TO BE HELD (Received February 21. 11.55 p.m.) CANBERRA. Feb. 21 Following unsuccessful attempts to solve the Pacific shipping problem arrangements have been made tentatively for a conference between shipping companies and representatives of the British, Commonwealth and New Zealand Governments in London during April. Dr. Earle Page is expected to represent'the Commonwealth. A recent deputation of British shipping interests indicated to the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, that drastic action M*as necessary * if they were to continue to compete with heavily/ subsidised foreign lines. The Commonwealth, since then, has been in constant negotiation with Britain and New Zealand. A substantial subsidy ov6r a period of years has been suggested, and requests have been mAde for the reservation to British shipping lines of all British passenger traffic between British ports. These proposals will be carefully investigated at the conference and an effort will be made finally to determine upon a plan of action which will enable United Kingdom ships to trade successfully in Pacific waters.
