RUNNING DESCRIBED

SUCCESS OF SANSFOY KOTOU BACK TO FORM HAPPY LANDING SCORES ' [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday Sansfov, favourite for the Maiden Plate, scored a very decisive >vim He begi,in well and, although Golden Anne and Tommy Atkins went with him for a couple of furlongs, ho drew clear from that stage and gave nothing a chance. Battle Pomp, who had been handy garly, came forward in the straight, but had no chance of reaching Sansfoy, who was kicked up when danger threatened, and comfortably held his lead. Battle Pomp was well clear of the rest, Mozeltove getting up on the fence to head Golden Anne for third, Maestro was, right up, ( followed .by Warehi and Trailer. The winner outclassed his opponents. Mozeltove's performance was rather good, as he was well back at the turn. Warehi also improved his position in the run home and might improve.

The field in the Oringi High-Weight Handicap, after being well strung out early, closed right, up in the straight and a desperate finish was staged, six or seven horses being separated only by heads. Victory went to the favourite Blue Tiger, and it was a very meritorious performance, as he was not handled very judiciously and had to bo a solid horse to win. Blue Tiger was last early and was pulling hard, but his rider elected to go after the leaders, Earl Colossus and Monarchy, at the six furlongs. Ho was still battling to get into the lead on the turn, but he was on terms outside them entering the straight. Here Tiger Bill, John Charles and, later Widden and ltoyal Papa, all came at him, while the leaders, Earl Colossus and Monarchy, also hung on. It was a desperate battle, but Blue Tiger hold on and won from Tiger Bill with Widden third. Then followed John Charles, ltoyal Papa, Earl Colossus and Monarchy all bunched. Tiger BUI did not get too much room. Widden's late run looked very dangerous, but he woakened just short, of the post. Favourite Wins Handicap Ethiop started a hot favourite for the Woodville Handicap. It was expected that ho would have most difficulty in beating Werohia, but it was the light-weight Queen's Pride who gave him the greatest trouble. Queen's Pride endeavoured to win all the way and hung on so well that when Ethiop went up to her in the straight he had to be hard ridden to head her off in tho final strides. Werohia loomed up entering the straight as a danger to both the leaders, but he did not run it out quite as well as he looked like doing at one stage. Ho should improve with the race. Full Throttle never looked like getting up, but the run may do him good also.

The two-year-old race was won comfortably by the favourite, Birthday Party. She missed the jump-out, but she had the pace to run up quickly in behind tho leader Silver River. Birthday Party challenged in the straight and, although Silver River hung on well, Birthday Party was not fullv extended to score. Siegmund showed up in the straight, but Taded near tho finish and lost third to The Bigot. The winner, who carried a couple of pounds over-weight, scored nicely. She carries the colours of Mr. T. H. Lowry and is a well-grown brown filly by Gainscourtfrom Marion's Birthday, by Psychology. Both Siegmund and The Bigot carried overweight. The Bigot, who had had only one previous race, was running on and should improve. Three-year-old Winner

The three-year-old filly Kotou returned to form in the President's ■ Handicap to win narrowly but decisively from Lord Moutoa and Vinco, who were the favourites in reverse order. Lord Moutoa took the lead off a well-bunch field at the five-furlongs and looked like staying there, but Kotou and Vinco'challenged in the straight. Kotou won well at the end, but Vinco was weakening. Mesurinn, always handy, was fourth, and Cheerful Day, last at the turn, was next. She looked unlucky. The winner was a speedy twoyearrold, but her earlier form this season had been disappointing. She was helped to-day by a 51b. allowance, but it was a fair performance. Fulojoy scored her first win of the season when she beat the favourite Sir Nigel in the Ruahine Handicap. She won all the way, beginning very smartly, while Sir Nigel was slow to get away and ,was five or six horses back when he settled down. Sir Nigel moved up in the straight, but never looked like catching Fulojoy. Lavina, who followed .the winner in running, lost third on the post to Porotiti, and then came Arctic King and Haut Monde. The winner ran an improved race. Sir Nigel was responsible for a creditable effort, and Porotiti improved on recent showings. Arctic King ran a good race for a fresh horse and was running on at the end. Haut Monde was also closer at the finish than at any other stago. Hack Sprint Contest

After delaying the start, La Crown got off best in the County Handicap, but she was beaten a good way from home, although she finished fourth. J)e Trop looked to have the race won in the straight, but her rider failed to keep her going strongly enough to stall ofT a fast run by Silver Song. The winner was well back early and also at the turn hut she came homo very solidly. ]lias, who was favourite, did not have a good passage on the rails, but finished a close third. Contact also failed to get a good run, but finished sixth. Happy Landing, after lying last in the early stages of the Kumeroa Handicap, moved up on tho rails in the middle stages and then came away in tho straight for a decisive win. Hest was ridden otit to the lead, but Whetmna took it off her at the fivefurlongs, and Hest was beaten entering tho straight, where Whetuma was clear. However, he failed to hold off Happy Landing, and in the final stride Chasto got up on the mils to make a dead-heat for second. Version, who looked likely entering tho straight, did not run on. Tho favourite Host finished last. The winner is greatly improved.
