UNEMPLOYED WOMEN
WORK OF COMMITTEE MANY POSITIONS FILLED Unemployed women and girls who registered at the bureau of the Auckland Unemployed Women's Emergency Committee from January 4 to February 15 this year totalled 334, according to a report prepared for the period. There were 265 new registrations, and 69 were brought forward. The bureau officer placed 118 of the applicants in suitable positions, an average of more than 19 a week, 32 found work through other channels, and 123 names were crossed off the list as applications were not renewed within 14 days, leaving 61 women and girls still on the list, the report stated. All women and girls who called at the bureau were interviewed, and, in special cases where work could not be found immediately, assistance and advice were given. Up to the end of the period under review only 137 of the 950 who registered at the special list at the Town Hall had re-registered. Of these, 84 were fligible to be placed on the official register as unemployed women. In addition to finding positions for 118 wpmen and girls, the organisation paid the fares of two girls proceeding to employment, paid tram fares for 28, issued chits for meals and accommodation for 39, paid registry office fees for five, and provided medical attention for seven. Positions unfilled totalled 47, with wages ranging from 10s to 30s a week."
