BATHING ATTIRE
WEARING OF SHORTS CITY COUNCIL ATTITUDE The controversy regarding the increasing brevity of swimming costumes was echoed at a meeting of the City Council last night, when inquiries regarding the wearing of sun-bathing shorts at the Parnell Baths M*ere considered, together with a report from the baths supervisor, Mr. M. Champion, advocating that the ban on these garments should be continued. Two letters were received from patrons of the Parnell Baths asking that the wearing of sun-bathing shorts should be permitted, but Mr. Champion stated in his report that a large number of patrons at the Shelly Beach, Parnell and Hobson Street baths were opposed to the granting of permission.
The recommendation of the Parks Committee was that a reply should bo sent in terms of Mr. Champion's report.. but the deputy-mayor, Mr. B. Martin, moved that the matter should be referred back to the committee. This was carried.
A member of the council, Mr. G. G. Grant, also asked that, "in view of the modern trend toward airiness in swimming attire," definite instructions should be given as to what limit, if any, should be allowed in the way of costumes worn at the baths.
The Parks Committee recommended that no action should be taken, holding that no alteration was desirable in the costumes, which were supplied at the baths. This Was adopted.
