MEN CEASE WORK
MOTOR FACTORY STAFF HIGHER WAGES SOUGHT LARGE NUMBER INVOLVED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday Between 450 and 500 men employed in the factory of General Motors, Limited, at Petone, ceased work at 2.30 p.m. to-day, following a lead set by 13 duco gunmen, who had unsuccessfully approached the management at lunch time for an increase in their present wages of 2s an hour. The men included painters, motor-body builders, assembly men and workers in the trim department and in the commercial department. After a delegation appointed by the men had met Mr. W. McHardy Forman, general manager of the company, to-night, Mr. Forman agreed to increase the.wages of the men by a penny an hour as from to-morrow, and to consider further representations they might have to make when he returns from Australia in about a fortnight. A decision concerning this offer will he made by the men at a meeting to be held at the factory at 7.30 tomorrow morning.
