TRUST BETRAYED
FORMER POLICEMAN'S LAPSE SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, Feb. 14 At the recent Quarter Sessions Judge White sentenced Johiy Ena McDonald Harcombo, an ex-police constable, to 18 months' imprisonment. There were four charges against Harcombe —three of breaking and entering and stealing, and one of attempting to break and enter with intent to commit a felony. Harcombe pleaded guilty to each charge. It was stated that other charges were pending. Sergeant Surridge said in evidence that Harcombe, who was 42 years of age, joined the police force in 1917 and attained the rank of first-class constable. He had a good record of service in the force. While stationed at Hurstville, where he was driver of the Police Department car, he had the keys of certain business premises. He entered these, taking articles which ho placed in the car and took to his home. Practically all the missing goods were recovered.
Mr. J. J. Cahill, M.L.A.. said he had known Harcombo for 20 years, and had formed a high opinion of his character, an opinion which, he believed, was shared by the public. Mr. Sheahan, who appeared for Harcombe, pleaded for leniency. He sajd Harcombe had suffered a tremendous punishment in the. loss of his position in the police force and all his service rights. His Honor said it was always a painful matter to deal with any offender and particularly when he had the career of Harcombe. "I am sure the punishment you have suffered is great," His Honor added, "but I am satisfied this is not a matter in which I can allow you your liberty. The policy of the law would insist on some penalty being imposed." It was directed that the sentence should be served on a prison farm.
