MATAMATA SUCCESS

CONTESTS IN THE RAIN BAD DAY FOR FAVOURITES SURPRISE BY MIO LUME PRINCE COLOSSUS SCORES Wet weather adversely affected the Matamata Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, rain throughout the day rendering the conditions very unpleasant and making the track heavy toward the end of the afternoon. In spite of the unfavourable circumstances there was e good attendance, and the totalisator returns kept up surprisingly well, the investments amounting to £18,142, against £12,690 10s last year, an increase of £446 10s. , The only favourite to win was Gay Streak, who scored in tho Putnruru Stakes, 'and the racing provided several surprises, the greatest being tho success of Mio Lume in the Tirau Hack Hurdles. Mio Lume was the outsider but one of the field of eight on both machines and returned tho best dividend of the day, paying double figures on the straight-out totalisator. The Matamata Hack Cup was won by Dark Marble, who relished the easy going, won attractively from the light-weight Barograph, who attempted to lead all the way to fade only near the end. After the race the grandfather clock valued at £4O, which accompanied the stake, was presented to tho winning owner, Mr. J. Corbett, by Mr. A. F. IVfoncur, M.P. Results:—
