NOTES ON THE RACING

LAP UP RUNS UNPLACED SUCCESS OF WAIT AND SEE LAST EVENT TO MAFEKING Carrying Gib. overweight, Mio Lume brought off a surprise in tho Tirau Hack Hurdles, paying double figures on tho win machine. Golden England and \ alorous wore tho early pacemakers and thoy were soon well clear of tho field, with Modern Maid and Mio Lume next. Valorous made play along the back, but he began to tiro nearing tho home turn, whore Coldon England assumed tho lead and Mio Lume, Irish Comet and Modern Maid were moving up. There was little between Golden England, Mio Lumo and Irish Comet at the last fence, and in a good finish Mio Lumo beat Irish Comet by a neck, with Golden England a head away third. Valorous was fourth, followed by Modern Maid, Royal Dispute and Lap Up. Mio Lume was well ridden by W. Rennie, which was a factor in his defeat of Irish Comet. Lap Up and Folly's Choice showed no dash at all, always being well back. Tho going was probably against Lap Up, who displays his best only when tho ground is dry. . I High Quality Unplaced The each-way favourite High Quality missed a place in the Hinuera Handicap. Le Turc was badly left at the start, Diacquedoon being quickly in tho lead from Grand Tonic, Thrust and Gay Papa. Diacquedoon carried on the running across the top and was first into the straight from Grand Tonic, Little Saint, Racemosus, Survanna and Gay Papa. Once in line for the post Grand Tonic and Little Saint challenged, but Diacquedoon stayed on to win by a length from Little Saint. Grand Tonic was a neck away third and Gay Papa was fourth. Next to finish were Carshalton and Survanna. The class was not good and Diacquedoon, who has been making steady improvement, was always a winner, although he had to be ridden out to defeat Little Saint. Relishing the going, Prince Colossus finished in determined fashion to win going away in the Waharoa Handicap. King; Ford went out fast and was soon well clear of Bellbroney, Wahine Reihi, Prince Colossus and Coronis. Entering the straight King Ford led by several lengths from Prince Colossus and Bellbroney, who were moving up. King Ford was still in command at the distance, but Prince Colossus ran on well' under pressure to defeat him by a length and a-quarter, Bellbroney was a similar distance away third, with Wahine Reihi a moderate fourth and Coronis well back. Prince Colossus was the outsider of the field of five on both machines. Wahine Reihi failed to show her best, evidently being unsuited by the going. Barograph Outstayed , . The light-weight Barograph made a good attempt to win the Matamata Hajck Cup from end to end, but he was outstayed at the finish by Dark! Marble, who cTaimed a SIK apprentice's! | aJlpwaixce ; _ and., waj., wei 1 ridden by I.: C. Smith. Barograph and Racett'e Were' : quickly prominent from Valrent and' Day Wind. Going along the back Barograph was just in front of Day Wind, who was on the rails, with Racette, Swift Spear and Dark Marble. Nearing the turn Dark Marble began to move up and he overhauled Barograph inside the distance to defeat him by two .lengths., Seaman was a length away third, just getting up to beat' Day Wind, who was followed by Valrent, Racette and Master Musk. The winner recorded a smooth performance, and Barograph ran his best race to date. Seaman made a very creditable showing and Day Wind flattered the hopes of bis Supporters for most'of the way, only to fade near the finish. The others were all well beaten. ? The Railway Hack Handicap was decisively won by Mangukaha, who opened her winning account at' Stratford during the holidays. Sir Tommy

reached the front quickly from Calcutta, Golden Princess and Mangukaha. Sir Tommy carried on the running across the top. and was first into the straight from Mangukaha, Leo Colossus and Kilberis. Once they straightened 4 up Mangukaha challenged and ran on strongly to score by three lengths from Queen Nona, who battled on solidly. Hope Lass came home strongly to get third a length away and Kilberis was fourth, followed by Leo .Colossus and Sir Tommy. Mangukaha revelled in the soft going and won well. Hope Lass camo from a long way back, being in the rear of the field in the early stages. Good Finishing Effort It was with a good finishing effort .that the. each-way favourite Gay Streak won the Putaruru Stakes after being well back in the early running. Brilliant Acre was soon in' the lead from Gay and Gold and Ruapai. Entering the straight Brilliant Aero was clear of Gay and Gold, Rnapai and Matoru, and at the distance he appeared to be winning comfortably. However, Gay Streak came very fast on the outside to win by half a length from Merial, who also finished strongly. Brilliant Acre, who tired quickly near the end, was a neck away third, and Gay and Gold was fourth, ahead of Bass. Gay Streak made a fine effort at the end, staying on very gamely when the pressure was applied. Merial, a wellbred filly by Chief Ruler from Melissa, displayed distinct promise. Brilliant Acre showed plenty of speed, but failed to run on well in the soft ground. After running below expectations in hor last few starts Wait and See scored her first, success sinco changing ownership some months ago when she won tho Walton Handicap. Master Norval was a trifle slow away, Solomon being first out to lead along tho back from Grand Talk, Prince Colossus and Wait and See. Turning into the straight Solomon was still in command from Prince Colossus, Wait and See and Grand Talk. Once they straightened up Solomon tired quickly and Wait and See finished on strongly to score very decisively by a length and a-half from Princo Colossus. Grand Talk was a similar distance away third and Master Norval was fourth, with Solomon and Puriri Park next. Wait and See handled the conditions splendidly. Prince Colossus ran another good race, *iven though he had a penalty of 91b. for his win earlier in the day. Three-Year-Old Winner

The three-year-old Mafeking gained a very convincing • victory in the Okoroire Hack Ilnndicap, for which Libra was an each-way favourite. Hope Lass and Valrent made most of the running from Killadar and Mafeking, who were "together ahead of Leo Colossus. Hope Lass and Valrent were still in charge entering the straight, but Mafeking finished on strongly to win nicely by half a length from Valrent, who fought on very gamely. Libra, who was in the rear most of the journey, stayed on to get third another halflength back, and Loo Colossus was fourth and Killadar fifth. Mafeking is making steady improvement and should meet with more success before the conclusion of the country circuit. Valrent went a good race, and Libra indicated that slip may not be long in winning..
